Bunting calls for law-enforcement internships for youth
Opposition spokesman on national security Peter Bunting is suggesting that institutions such as the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) and Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) should provide internship programmes aimed at improving the personal discipline of adolescents with a view to future career development.
Bunting, during an interview with The Gleaner, said he was making the call so that young people, who are facing the highest levels of unemployment, may consider careers in law enforcement.
Bunting, who was the minister of national security in the last administration, said opportunities were needed so that young people may not consider a path of crime.
According to Bunting, for years, there have been increases in the occurrence of youth crime and violence, particularly among the poorest and most vulnerable. He said the unemployment rate among youth in Jamaica is more than double the overall unemployment rate.
The former minister said young people needed opportunities wherever they were available.
