For 30-odd years, politicians have done nothing - Gordon Town resident

Seeking to overturn more than 30 years of "nothing", one voter from the Gordon Town division in East Rural St Andrew, though admitting he could not influence others, chose to exercise his right and vote during Monday's parish council elections.
Dr Hansel Beckford told The Gleaner that too often he and others from his community had to pool resources to get things done, because those elected have neglected their responsibilities.
According to Beckford, the Gordon Town area lacks development and he hopes whomever was elected would finally deliver to the benefit of its citizens.
At the end of the the count on Monday, the Jamaica Labour Party's Neville Whittaker won the division with 1,338 votes to 600 for Barrington Walsh of the People's National Party.
When The Gleaner asked Beckford what he would like to see happen in his community, he said: "Physical infrastructure. I live right up there and for 30-odd years they have not done anything."
Beckford told The Gleaner that the roads in the community required resurfacing and that water running throughout the hilly sections on to the roadways needed to be channeled properly.
According to Beckford, residents themselves have come together over the years to get things done.
Deplorable road conditions and non-functioning street lights were among the top concerns of some residents who chose not to vote Monday.
When our news team ventured throughout Gordon Town, the voting process there was dismal, with election day workers sitting and waiting for the next elector to turn up.
