Police Federation gives thumbs up to Grant as acting commissioner

The Police Federation has thrown its support behind the appointment of Deputy Commissioner of Police Novlette Grant to act as commissioner of police in the wake of Dr Carl Williams' decision to step down as top cop, effective January 6, 2017.

"The Police Federation fully endorses the appointment of Deputy Commissioner Novlette Grant to act as commissioner of police. We will rally the troops, just as we did with previous commissioners, to ensure that her tenure will be a success," said Sergeant Raymond Wilson, the chairman of the federation.

In a statement yesterday afternoon, Wilson also commented on the resignation of Williams. He said the Central Committee of the Federation has enjoyed a healthy working relationship with the commissioner.

EXCELLENT OFFICER

Describing the commissioner as an excellent police officer and a distinguished public servant, Wilson said, "Dr Williams' leadership has inspired our membership and has gained their commitment to continue the arduous work in the unrelenting fight against the criminal elements which continue to haunt our society."

"The entire rank and file cohort applauds his service and wishes him well in his future undertakings. We are proud that the Jamaica Constabulary Force can, and has, produced a sufficient pool of talent from which Dr Williams' successor can be drawn," he added.

"We wish Dr Williams every success in the future even as we pledge our continued commitment to the new leadership, acting or confirmed. We will remain true to the mission to serve, protect and reassure the citizens of Jamaica," he said.
