Bustamante Hospital for Children ICU Temporarily Closed Due to Fire

Published:Friday | January 13, 2017 | 12:00 AM

The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Bustamante Hospital for Children has been closed temporarily as a result of a fire in the unit on Thursday night.

Initial reports suggest that the fire occurred at approximately 7:15 p.m. in the consultants' room but was quickly contained by staffers with the use of an extinguisher. The fire department was also summoned for further assistance.

Four patients occupying the ICU were swiftly evacuated to another section of the hospital. The patients were not affected by the fire but are being monitored closely by the staff. However, one member of staff was treated for smoke inhalation.

Damage assessment will commence, immediately followed by repairs, so the ICU will be reopened in the shortest time possible, the hospital reported.

The University Hospital of the West Indies will facilitate paediatric ICU patients until the ICU is reopened.
