Cultural void as JCDC icon dies

The Jamaica Cul-tural Development Commission (JCDC) family was left numb yesterday as news spread of the sudden passing of its executive director, Dr Delroy Gordon. Reeling from the shock, several Jamaicans shared in their grief.

Gordon, 55, died unexpectedly in the Port Maria Hospital in St Mary. He was hospitalised after complaining of ill health.

"Dr Gordon was a visionary leader who contributed significantly to Jamaica's cultural development. I offer my condolences to his immediate family during this very difficult period and join with the JCDC family in mourning his untimely passing," said Prime Minister Andrew Holness.

"Dr Gordon's work speaks for itself. He worked assiduously to promote our cultural heritage locally and internationally, and his work will always be remembered and appreciated."

Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport Olivia 'Babsy' Grange said: "His passing has left a void in the cultural development sector. He was an affable and capable man who was dedicated to cultural development and committed to the JCDC, which we know was one of the loves of his life. The other love was his family, whose grief we all share."

Grange noted that Gordon's association with the JCDC dated back to 1977 when he won his first medal in the National Dance Competition while attending the Mount Angus All-Age School in St Mary.

"This is devastating news. The country has lost a true patriot who was dedicated to high-quality service to our people. He was a gentle giant who got the job done selflessly while commanding respect from everyone with whom he came in contact," said former culture minister Lisa Hanna.

"Mr Gordon worked with us and ensured that the staff of the JCDC planned and implemented our cultural events. We were able to give the country and visitors a memorable Jamaica 50 celebration, and since then, anchor July 31 to August 6 as an anticipated cultural calendar event for all."
