80 days, 78 road fatalities - Trelawny crash claims two lives

The carnage on Jamaica's roads continued last Friday as two more persons succumbed to injuries they received during a motor vehicle collision.

This time, the victims have been identified as 26-year-old Rohan Williams, security officer of Bethany, Alexandria, St Ann, and 25-year-old Twayna McLennon, nurse of Orange Hill, Brown's Town, also in St Ann.

The police report that about 7:30 p.m. last Friday, Williams was driving a Mitsubishi Lancer with McLennon aboard on the Harmony Hall main road in Trelawny when he reportedly overtook a line of traffic and collided with a Subaru Legacy motor car travelling in the opposite direction.

They were taken to hospital, where Williams and McLennon were pronounced dead and the driver of the Subaru was treated and released.

So far this year, 78 persons have lost their lives on the nation's roads. But this is down by approximately 28 per cent when compared to the corresponding period last year, where 108 fatalities were recorded.

"We have been maintaining a strong presence and have been notifying and providing people with the information face to face," Kenute Hare, director of the Road Safety Unit, told The Sunday Gleaner as he reacted to the latest road deaths.

"One thing that we have found out is that a lot of people are not aware that their licence can be revoked if they accumulate a certain amount of points," added Hare.
