Road repairs on track in Hanover

The J$10-million road-rehabilitation project, which is now taking place along the Haughton Grove to Miles Town roadway in Hanover, is said to be approximately 40 per cent complete.

Some 5,000 square metres of roadway will be rehabilitated under this project, which started on February 14. In addition, with major improvements expected to the drainage, the travelling public should enjoy much more comfort in the near future.

The National Works Agency (NWA) said that the work being done should be completed in two months, which was within the contracted time frame initially announced.

The roadway, which was in a deplorable condition, is used by residents to access the Miles Town and Haughton Grove communities. It is also linked to the neighbouring communities of Chigwell, Mt Peto and Hopewell.

The project is being funded through the Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF), with D.R. Foote Construction Company carrying out the work.

"We had a little bit of challenge earlier with the weather, but the work should be completed within the contract time frame, as there is no allowance for variation," Janel Ricketts, the NWA Western Region community relations officer, told The Gleaner.

Meanwhile, residents from within the Miles Town community, who have been begging over the years for something to be done to the roadway, are happy. However, others were somewhat disappointed that the repairs did not extend beyond the designated 5,000 square metres.

"We are grateful, but we would have been even more grateful if the road was repaired through to the village square and even beyond," said one resident."
