Deadline for written submissions on minimum wage looms

The Minimum Wage Advisory Commission has issued a reminder that tomorrow (Monday, June 19, 2017) is the deadline for written submissions on the review of the National Minimum Wage and the Minimum Wage for Industrial Security Guards.
The commission had previously invited members of the public to make written submissions to the Ministry of Labour and Social Security on whether the rates should be increased and the suggested appropriate level of increase.
The commission had also noted that persons submitting recommendations could be asked to appear before it in support of their written correspondence.
In the meantime, the commission said, a series of islandwide consultations are being scheduled from June 20, 2017 to July 13, 2017 to garner public interest and participation.
The first meeting will be held on Tuesday at the Montego Bay Civic Centre in Sam Sharpe Square, St James, starting at 1 p.m.
The National Minimum Wage was last increased on March 1, 2016, moving from $5,600 to $6,200 for a 40-hour workweek.
The Minimum Wage for Industrial Security Guards was also increased at that time from $8,198 to $8,854 weekly.
