'I couldn't keep it in' - Tears of gratitude for Gleaner's GSAT county scholarships

At least two parents were brought to tears after their children were presented with scholarships at The Gleaner's Spelling Bee 2017 Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT) County Scholarship Awards Luncheon.

Marlene Tucker, mother of Angel Tucker, the Middlesex recipient, said as she sat through the ceremony, she could not help but recall the many challenges she had to overcome in sending her children to school.

"I'm overjoyed. I remember where we are coming from and how she made me feel so proud. I couldn't keep it in. God is good," Tucker said yesterday during the function at the media house's North Street offices in Kingston.

"This will go a far way in helping me with school fee, books and the travelling expenses. She did her best. Many times, she missed GSAT classes because of the Spelling Bee. She is my first daughter and we have been through some difficult times, so I am very happy that she pulled through."

Angel, who will take her place at St Mary High School in September, was also happy for the assistance, indicating that she intends to remain focused.

"It will help with my school fee and other things, so today is a good day. I'm really happy," said the young lady.

JUMPED FOR JOY

Tavia Josephs, mother of the Editor's Special Scholarship awardee, Jaheim Blackwood, said though she endured some tough issues, she always believed in her son.

"I got the call when I was at work. I was sitting, and when mi hear, I jumped so high because I was excited!" she exclaimed.

"It was just me and my mother taking care of him since he was two weeks old - no father, no other family member to take care of him - but we believed in him and we knew he could do it. Sometimes the road was so hard, but we still pushed through."

The other two county recipients are Jemoy Jarrett, from the county of Cornwall; and Lando Fullerton from Surrey.

Christopher Barnes, managing director of The Gleaner Company (Media) Limited, said educational development will remain an integral part of the organisation.

"The focus on education as an important pillar of national development is something that we will never compromise on," Barnes noted.

He added: "In my time, 'A' levels would have been the most difficult exam. I think it is safe to say that the GSAT is the most difficult exam that these students will go through in their entire schooling. If they can handle this pressure and excel, they are well positioned to do well going forward."
