Inside the Municipal Corporation | Portland Municipal Corporation wants street-sweeping programme extended

The chief executive officer (CEO) of the Portland Municipal Corporation will shortly be writing to the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), asking the agency to extend its street-sweeping programme to sections of the Rio Grande Valley in the parish.

A decision was made by the corporation following persistent reports by councillor for the Rio Grande division, Erwin 'Louie' Brown. The councillor insisted that the streets, especially along the main thoroughfare at Fellowship Square, and the raft stand at Berrydale in the Rio Grande Valley should be cleaned and maintained on a regular basis.

Fay Neufville, CEO of the corporation, said that dialogue was had with the NSWMA on Friday, July 7, but it was revealed that the agency's current street-sweeping programme is only concentrated in the Port Antonio region and along the main road in each town.

"NSWMA is only responsible for sweeping the streets of Port Antonio and other town areas," said pointed out.

Brown had complained repeatedly that the streets in Fellowship, especially the roadway leading to Rio Grande, Portland's premier tourist attraction site, are unsightly, littered with garbage and animal faeces.
