Unified in Pink - Breast cancer awareness initiative a success

Symbolic of a unified front to bring awareness to breast cancer while serving as a beacon of hope to those battling the dreaded disease, yesterday's Pink Day was declared a resounding success by Yulit Gordon, executive director of the Jamaica Cancer Society.

In every nook and cranny across Jamaica, men, women, and children could be seen clad in varying shades of pink in support of the day's activities.

Gordon said that she was particularly pleased with the increased number of men donning pink this year as an expression of solidarity with the cancer warriors fighting the disease as well as those who have beaten it. Pink Day also paid respect to those who lost the battle.

"The consciousness of the colour and its significance during this month was taken to new heights as the Jamaica Cancer Society team was inundated with requests for visits to offices and schools across the Corporate Area. Countless persons wanted photo opportunities and made donations. We also got numerous promises for donations," Gordon told The Gleaner.

The executive director is encouraging all of Jamaica to support the remaining events for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is recognised internationally in October, as well as to give whatever they can to the Jamaica Cancer Society to help in the fight.

Yesterday, several Jamaicans heeded the call by wearing pink and taking a photo with The Gleaner's special Pink Day edition in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Here are a few highlights. Look out for more over the course of this month.
