The Gleaner newspaper yesterday received high commendations for what was described as their kind and unique gesture of printing the publication on pink paper on several occasions for the month of October, as part of its multi-pronged initiative to bring awareness to the dreaded breast cancer disease. October is commemorated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Michael Fraser, vice-chairman of the Jamaica Cancer Society, in his address to the audience at the Keeping Abreast Luncheon, which was held at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel in New Kingston, said it was an outstanding method employed by the multimedia company, which has set a trend of excellence and support.

"I don't know if you notice that even The Gleaner was in pink. I want to publicly acknowledge and thank The Gleaner for their support not just for this month, but over the years. This one (pink paper), however, was particularly in your face, and we say thanks," Fraser said.

The vice-chairman said despite the challenges faced in the public sector, the cancer society is resolute in serving citizens no matter their socio-economic status.

"In the public sector, there is not one mammography machine. All mammograms in Jamaica are done in private doctor's offices, private institutions, and the Jamaica Cancer Society. The Jamaica Cancer

Society does an average of 10,000 mammograms for the last five years," Fraser said.

"Let us always remember that there are so many others who have not been successful in the fight against cancer, we have been successful, we are here and so we give thanks."
