Major flooding in Montego Bay

Several streets and businesses in Montego Bay, St Jamaica have been extensively flooded following heavy rains out west Wednesday afternoon.

Photos and videos on social media sites show flooded cars abandoned in the streets converted to major waterways.

People have also been seeking refuge on elevated piazzas and multi-storey buildings.

One woman, who identified herself as Miss Vicky, told RJR’s Beyond the Headlines that the situation was grave.

She said the water rose as high as six feet in some places, covering cars and rails.

“Montego Bay got all of the rain that came today,” she said.

Miss Vicky also reported that people had to seek refuge in a bank and the force of rushing water broke a window.

She said several cars were "bungled up" between St James Street and Union Street.

Meanwhile, the president of the Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce and Industry T’Shura Gibbs says the town is now a traffic nightmare.

The National Works Agency has confirmed that the flooding in Montego Bay has resulted in serious congestion entering and leaving the city.
