Police lauded for weekend traffic-control strategy

There was ample praise for the police from the motoring public on the weekend, following the cops' strong showing at 42 critical intersections in the Corporate Area, which helped to ease traffic flow in the bustling capital city.
Many had braced for gridlock on the 'payday weekend', but when they found very little difficulty traversing the city, some took to social media to express their gratitude to members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).
"Driving throughout the Corporate Area these last few days has made me feel reassured and protected. There is a sense of law, order, and discipline on our roads, and I thank you (JCF). Keep up the great work," Andria Whyte, a justice of the peace, said.
"Shout out to the police [who] drove up in front of those unruly cars trying to overtake a line of traffic on Winchester (Road). Make them reverse, yes!" one observer shared.
Speaking with The Gleaner yesterday, head of the police traffic division Calvin Allen said that the police were making a deliberate effort to restore order on the roads often overrun by unruly taxi and bus operators.
He disclosed that the initiative came directly from the desk of the acting police commissioner, Clifford Blake, and started last week Monday.
"We were very deliberate and purposeful in ensuring that we had that sort of a presence at critical intersections to prevent gridlock and prevent any form of congestion. I know that numbers and effective presence are critical towards greater order on our roads."
The senior cop promised that the efforts would continue and that the cops would be out in their numbers today as they take further measures to crack down on lawbreakers.
