TAJ warns against complacency

Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) is warning taxpayers against getting complacent in light of the extension for filing their tax returns and making payments, which were due on Thursday, March 15.
"We still encourage persons to beat the rush and not wait until Saturday, March 24, the new date, since the penalties become applicable both for filing and payment on the next day, (Sunday) March 25," Leighton Beckles, communications officer, told The Gleaner.
He went on to explain that there has been a significant up-tick in persons filing online, as well as in office, across all tax offices islandwide, with an estimated 15,000 new persons brought into the tax net. One of the reasons for the extension is to help new taxpayers who might have some difficulty with the process.
Income tax returns for 2017 and estimated income and asset tax returns for 2018 are the areas for which TAJ will open select tax offices on Saturday, March 24.
