Cabinet to review INDECOM ruling

Justice Minister Delroy Chuck says the parliamentary committee that examined the legislation governing the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) had agreed that the oversight body should have the power to arrest and prosecute police personnel.

The disclosure comes in the wake of Friday's landmark ruling by the Court of Appeal that INDECOM does not have the power to arrest and prosecute cops.

Chuck told The Gleaner he plans to take the issue to the Cabinet on Monday for discussions with his colleagues.

He says he will suggest that another parliamentary committee be appointed to re-examine the INDECOM legislation.

According to Chuck, the government needs to make it very clear whether INDECOM is to be empowered to arrest and prosecute police personnel.
