Teacher in freak accident death case appears in court

The teacher who was charged in relation to the death of a seven-year-old student of Anchovy Primary in St James was given a new date when she appeared in the St James Parish Court yesterday to answer a charge of death by dangerous driving, .

The student, Easton Stapleton, was killed when the car driven by Kerry-Ann Cunningham struck him down in the schoolyard, resulting in his death.

When Cunningham appeared in court to answer the charge against her, she sat looking contrite as presiding Parish Judge Sandria Wong-Small was updated on matters relating to the case before giving a new court date.

During the court proceedings, the prosecution disclosed that the postmortem had not yet been conducted and that a report from the police Accident Investigation Reconstruction Unit was outstanding from the case file.

Subsequent to the statements from the prosecution, Wong-Small extended Cunningham's station bail until October 4, at which time the file is expected to be completed.

It was reported that on June 12, at approximately 4 p.m., Cunningham lost control of her car while reversing on the Anchovy Primary School compound. The car struck young Easton and then crashed into a wall, which collapsed, resulting in a vendor sustaining minor injuries.

Following investigations by the police, Cunningham was charged with death by dangerous driving but was offered station bail with a directive to appear in court yesterday.
