JUTC Wi-Fi pilot has passengers smiling already

Some Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) passengers in the Corporate Area have started to enjoy free Wi-Fi service on four of the state-run buses. Wi-Fi devices have been installed on the buses as part of a pilot project before full rollout of roughly 450 devices.
"The pilot phase is on in earnest. We have had positive feedback from passengers who have used the service. They say it is very fast and crystal clear," JUTC Communications Manager Cecil Thoms told The Gleaner yesterday.
"We had committed to roll out the full service by the end of December. We are committed to doing the first phase by the end of August, by which time 100 buses will have Wi-Fi. There are several infrastructural projects on our roads [which may cause a delay], so it makes sense for people to be able to communicate and do work as well," he said.
Growth Tech Limited CEO Neil Lawrence said yesterday that he was pleased with the progress of the pilot so far. Growth Tech is partnering with Digicel in rolling out the free service.
"We've got good feedback from drivers. What we are doing now is getting information from the pilot. We will continue to roll out and monitor the service as we go along," said Lawrence.
The four buses equipped with Wi-Fi capabilities so far run on routes 32, 23A, 46, and 98.
