We are ready! - NWA says major Corporate Area traffic changes should work well

Workmen from the National Works Agency were busy yesterday installing new stop lights and doing road marking at the intersection of Spanish Town Road and Maxfield Avenue, as well as East Avenue. Major traffic changes across sections of the Corporate Area to facilitate road improvement works are now in effect.

National Works Agency Communications Manager Stephen Shaw is optimistic that the new traffic changes now in effect throughout the Corporate Area will work well as schools reopen today. However, he is asking that persons be mindful of their behaviour on the roads.

"We have done quite a bit of work. Lately, we have done final touches in relation to markings and reversing the timing on the traffic lights. We are in gear for whatever it is that may come our way today.

Some of the changes are new and some are not so new, but persons will have to monitor their behaviour. We definitely are going to be monitoring the changes and we are prepared to modify them," Shaw told The Gleaner yesterday.

Traffic lights at the intersections of Red Hills and Eastwood Park roads, as well as Red Hills and Constant Spring roads, have been out of service for approximately a week, but Shaw said they were fixed yesterday.

Since the major traffic changes were announced last week, several persons have raised concerns, especially in light of the fact that they take effect simultaneously as the new school term begins.

"What about persons who travel on the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) buses from Portmore to Three Miles? Where do I get off the bus? I do hope there are no additional costs to commuters," one person said in a WhatsApp message to The Gleaner.

A resident of Greenwich Town said: "I work in Half-Way Tree. With East Avenue turning into a one way, what does it leave Greenwich [Town] residents to do? The taxis are not going to turn off."
