Jealousy sparks double murder-suicide in MoBay - Man slaughters lover and her daughter then kills himself
Western Bureau:
Residents of Rosemount, St James, were left bewildered yesterday morning when they woke up to the shocking news of the murder of a mother and her daughter and the subsequent suicide by the woman's common-law husband, who killed himself by driving a car into the Rio Cobre in St Catherine.
The woman, who was stabbed multiple times, has been identified as 45-year-old Deon Smith, a service station supervisor.
Her daughter, whose throat was slashed as she slept, is 16-year-old Jayshenel Gordon, a student of the Herbert Morrison Technical High School.
The accused killer, who is believed to be in his late 30s, has been identified as Fabian Lyewsang. Lyewsang's 13-year-old son, who he took with him when he fled the scene, has not been located.
"It is a cruel act," said Hopeton McPherson, the uncle of the slain woman.
"I know this man (Lyewsang) for quite a while, and although he did not talk a lot, I never expected anything like this from him."
However, according to residents of the community, which is located some five minutes from downtown Montego Bay, the killing might have been sparked by jealousy as they claimed that Lyewsang has been complaining to his friends that Smith was being unfaithful to him.
"Him always a seh she a gi him bun, but me neva know seh him woulda tek it to such a level," a resident told The Gleaner.
"And because him a nuh de talkative type, you couldn't really know wha a gwaan inna him head. But it is a wicked act, especially fi cut di likkle girl throat."
One resident said that Lyewsang was also unfaithful because his missing son was born to another woman during his relationship with Smith.
"Him go out go get pickney and de woman neva left him or kill him, and now look wha him do - 'bout him, a get bun," said the furious female resident. "Why him kill himself? Him shoulda stand up and face justice. Him is a wutliss coward."
According to reports at about 2:15 a.m., Lyewsang and Smith got into a heated quarrel at their Rosemount home. During the argument, Smith was attacked with a knife and stabbed multiple times all over her body. Lyewsang later went upstairs to Gordon's room and slashed her throat.
After the double killing, Lyewsang is said to have awakened his son, who had apparently been sleeping during the commotion, and they fled the location in Smith's Nissan Tiida motor car, which he subsequently drove into the Rio Cobre, resulting in his death.
