No Jamaicans hurt in UWI protest in Trinidad and Tobago - Johnson Smith

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Kamina Johnson Smith, sought to reassure concerned members of the public that no Jamaican students were hurt during protests at the University of the West Indies, St Augustine Campus, last Thursday.

Reports indicate that students have been protesting because of safety and security concerns at the institution. However, Johnson Smith said, "Our high commission in Trinidad and Tobago advised that reports from the Jamaican Students' Association in Trinidad and Tobago indicated that no Jamaican students were hurt.

The ministry was further advised that the protesters were largely Trinidadian nationals, although some members of other regional students' associations had supported them."

Johnson Smith gave the assurance that "our Jamaican High Commission in the capital of Port-of-Spain will continue to closely monitor any further developments relating to this campus incident".
