Against the reports of the devastating impact that gambling addiction has had on families worldwide, the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission (BGLC) in Jamaica has made responsible gaming one of its mantras even as it regulates the sector, and here is why:

Vitus Evans, executive director, BGLC

"We support responsible gaming because we understand that there is an aspect of the thing that can create problems, whether it is addiction or trouble for patrons."

Karla Small Dwyer, director legal services, BGLC

"We support it because we don't want to encourage gambling addiction. We want people who are playing the games to be very careful with their resources."

Noel Bacquie, director of enforcement, BGLC

"To protect persons and their families."

Maurice Thompson, director of licensing and registration, BGLC

"Responsible gaming is the only gaming."

Jeanette Lewis, manager for corporate affairs and communication, BGLC

"As a regulator, one of our roles is protecting the consumer, and responsible gaming is a critical part of achieving that."
