The RJRGLEANER Honour Awards is celebrating its 39th edition, and this year, several persons and organisations are in line to receive awards. The National Health Fund (NHF), cited for its excellent contribution to the health needs of Jamaicans, was among a list of six to be awarded yesterday at the 2018 RJRGLEANER Honour Awards, the 39th edition.

Also awarded were Dr Wendel Abel, accomplished professor of psychiatry, and head of the community health and psychiatry in the Faculty of Medical Sciences (Special Award in the category of Health and Wellness); Marvin Hall, founder of Halls of Learning (Special Award in the category of Science and Technology); Melvyn Tennant (Voluntary Service) for his dedication to the protection of Jamaica's endangered sea turtles and the coral reef in St Mary through activism and preservation activities; Reggae Sumfest 2018 represented by head of Downsound Records, Josef Bogdanovich, in the category of Entertainment; and 2018 'UK X-Factor' winner Dalton Harris (Special Award in the category of Entertainment).

 

Contribution to development

 

The RJRGLEANER Honour Awards recognises the initiatives, accomplishments and courage of individuals or organisations that have made a sterling contribution to Jamaica's development in the categories of art and culture, sports, science and technology, entertainment, business, public service, education, voluntary service, and health and wellness.

The Honour Awards will feature three luncheons, where awardees will be cited for their contribution to national development in their respective fields of endeavour and will culminate in a gala event to be held at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel in New Kingston in February.

The first luncheon was held yesterday at The Gleaner's North Street head office to mark the start of a series of events in honour of the awardees.

Chief executive officer at the NHF, Everton Anderson, said that his team members have accepted the challenge and have been doing the job to help make Jamaica a healthier country.

Sharon Schroeter, who collected the citation on behalf of Harris, who is said to be in London, noted his pleasure at receiving the award.

"I am very proud of this award and I will be flying the Jamaican flag high," Schroeter said, relaying a message from the entertainer.
