Chedwin Park cops remanded

Following a ruling by the director of public prosecutions that they be charged last Friday, corporals Kirk Fraser and Ramone Scott were yesterday remanded when they made their first appearance in the downtown Kingston-based Home Circuit Court.
The policemen are charged with three counts of illegal possession of firearm and ammunition and one count each of murder, manslaughter and shooting with intent.
Allegations are that shortly after midnight on April 28, Fraser, Scott and a third policeman, Corporal Rohan Williams, fatally shot St Catherine businessman Sheldon ‘Junior Biggs’ Daley during a party in Chedwin Park, St Catherine, before fleeing the scene in the Nissan motor car.
According to reports, an off-duty policeman who witnessed the incident gave chase and challenged the men, unaware they were his colleagues.
The high-speed gunfight ended when the Nissan motor car collided with another vehicle at the intersection of Brunswick Avenue and Job Lane in Spanish Town.
When the dust settled, Williams and Kevron Burrell, a visitor to the island and who was a passenger in that car, were pronounced dead.
Attorney-at-law Queen’s Counsel, Valerie Neita-Robertson, who is representing Fraser, yesterday made an application for a gag order to be placed on the media.
However, presiding judge Justice C. Brown Beckford said the application was premature.
Meanwhile, Director of Public Prosecutions Paula Llewellyn told the court that a number of documents were not ready, among them post-mortem and ballistic reports, as well as a report from the police’s Communication Forensics and Cybercrime Division on the phone seized from Scott.
A statement from the superintendent of police in charge of St Catherine, another from a locksmith, and a forensic report on DNA matter found on firearms are also outstanding.
The matter is set for mention on July 2.
