Businesses urged to review cash policies to deter robbers

Business operators in Clarendon are being urged to review how they store and transport cash to deter criminals from launching brazen attacks such as the one which unfolded in the parish capital on Sunday, in which hoodlums made of with $3 million and other valuables.

Winsome Witter, who chairs the Clarendon Chamber of Commerce, said Sunday’s incident in which two officers were shot after responding to a robbery in May Pen and the dramatic fashion of the incident highlight the extent of lawlessness across the country.

“Naturally, the business community is still trying to process the details of what happened. However, we are grateful that no life was lost in the mayhem,” Witter told The Gleaner.

She said the apparent tactical preparedness of the perpetrators in executing the robbery was cause for concern and urged businesses to review their cash-management policies as part of their internal security measures.

“We are also imploring the Ministry of National Security to move beyond talk and take action in full implementation of JamaicaEye security network, which goes beyond the mere installation of camera systems,” Witter said, adding that the chamber is willing to collaborate on the initiative.

GUN BATTLE

It is reported that minutes after 9 a.m., two vehicles carrying several gunmen were seen at the premises.

The robbers were surprised by two officers attached to the May Pen Police Station who were on patrol duties.

A gun battle ensued and the officers were shot.

The constable who sustained gunshot wounds to the face and shoulder has been released from the hospital, while the sergeant who was shot in the abdomen, buttocks, groin and left leg is still under medical care.

The incident has sparked renewed calls for enhanced security measures in May Pen. Among those urging action are Central Clarendon Member of Parliament Mike Henry and Mayor of May Pen Winston Maragh.
