Cop convicted on gun charges

The police corporal who was arrested and charged with breaches of the Firearms Act in 2018 has been sentenced to a combined 17 years imprisonment.

Corporal Devon Miller was sentenced to nine years imprisonment on the charge of possession of an AK-47 rifle, six years for the possession of a Taurus 9mm pistol, and two years for the possession of 30 assorted rounds of ammunition.

Miller was arrested on October 2 last year on Myers Lane in Newlands, St Catherine. It is reported that police officers attached to the Counter-Terrorism and Organised Crime Investigations Branch nabbed Miller during a snap raid about 8 p.m. The weapons and ammunition were found in a motor car that he was driving.

The sentences are to run concurrently.

 

 

Driver arrested for 615 outstanding tickets

Police officers from the Public Safety and Traffic Enforcement Branch (PSTEB) arrested another rogue driver with hundreds of outstanding tickets on Thursday.

He is 39-year-old Dwayne Mitchell of 8 Miles in Bull Bay, St Andrew.

PSTEB officers executed a warrant that was issued for his arrest when he failed to pay 615 traffic tickets.

He was taken before the court, where he was fined $65,000 or 30 days in jail. His driver's licence was also suspended for six months.

 

 

Cops seek info on suspected hit and run

The Grants Pen Police in St Andrew are appealing to the public for information that can assist their investigation of a suspected hit and run incident on Arcadia Drive in Kingston 8 on Thursday.

Reports are that about 3 a.m., police officers on patrol found an unidentified man lying in the middle of the roadway. He appeared to have been hit by a motor vehicle.

He was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The deceased man appears to be in his 30s. He is of fair complexion, about 5 feet 6 inches tall, and was clad in a black, long-sleeved shirt and black shorts.

Anyone with information that can assist investigators is being asked to contact the Grants Pen Police at 876-755-1597, police 119 emergency number, or the nearest Police Station.

 

 

JDF to conduct training in St Ann this month

The Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) will be conducting training exercises in and around the Lydford community in St Ann over the period from October 7 to 19.

The JDF is advising residents that there is no need to be alarmed by the presence of the soldiers as the training exercises will not involve any live firing and, therefore, will pose no danger.

Residents are asked not to interfere with and/or move training aides. In the event that unexploded ordnances or paraphernalia are found, please report it to the JDF headquarters at telephone number (876) 960-8776.

Firearms, silencer seized

Members of the security forces seized two firearms and three rounds of ammunition during an operation in Cornpiece, Clarendon, on Thursday.

Reports are that about 11 a.m., lawmen were on operation at an abandoned building when the firearms, ammunition and a firearm sound suppressor (silencer) was found at the back of the premises. No arrests were made.

In St James, a firearm was handed over to police and one man taken into custody following an incident in Johns Hall, also on Thursday.

Reports are that about 11 a.m., the complainant was leaving a nightclub, when he was attacked by a man who hit him with a firearm. A tussle ensued between the two and the assailant was disarmed. The police were subsequently summoned and the firearm – a .38 revolver – was handed over to them.

The suspect was later taken into custody. His identity is being withheld pending further investigations.
