Alorica Portmore to close for good

The Portmore branch of the Alorica call centre, which became the epicentre of a surge in COVID-19 cases in Jamaica in April, is set to close permanently.

The outbreak at Alorica resulted in a shutdown of both its Portmore and Kingston sites and triggered a lockdown of the entire parish of St Catherine.

Alorica, like other business process outsourcing (BPO) firms, has activated work-from-home arrangements.

The rash of cases, into the hundreds, caused the Government of Jamaica to impose a temporary shutdown of BPO plants islandwide under the Disaster Risk Management Act.

Alorica delivered news of the permanent closure of its Portmore offices to its Jamaica staff last Thursday, which means that some employees of the call centre may soon be out of work.

In an email obtained by The Gleaner, Alorica said that the last few months had been challenging.

The Kingston site will be reopened soon.
