The MAJ is now calling for the leaders of both political parties to pay more than “lip service” to the public health measures initiated to battle COVID-19.

The Medical Association of Jamaica (MAJ) says it is disheartened that members of the public and supporters of both political parties seem not to be taking the COVID-19 pandemic seriously.

In a release Thursday night, the MAJ said the recent upsurge in cases indicates that Jamaica is now in the midst of a second wave.

"Our observations of Nomination Day on Tuesday were disheartening," said an MAJ spokesperson.

The MAJ said there was no physical distancing and only a few persons were wearing masks.

At the same time, it said there were little visible efforts by the authorities to enforce the regulations under the Disaster and Risk Management Act.

The MAJ is now calling for the leaders of both political parties to pay more than “lip service” to the public health measures initiated to battle COVID-19.

"The leadership of both parties have indicated that their respective supporters will behave responsibly but actions speak louder than words," said the MAJ spokesperson.

It wants the leaders to declare publicly, specific measures that they will take at this time to help in the fight against COVID-19.
