Sykes puzzled at gang rap as more charges crumble

Chief Justice Bryan Sykes admitted on Tuesday that he was puzzled about some of the charges that have been laid against individuals who are alleged to have been part of the Uchence Wilson Gang.
That comment came as more of the alleged gang members were acquitted of charges against them as the chief justice continued his summation at the Home Circuit Court in downtown Kingston.
Derron Taylor, Fitzroy Scott, Shantol Gordon, and Machel Golbourne were found not guilty of knowingly obtaining a benefit from a criminal organisation.
Tuesday’s acquittals add to the increasing number of not-guilty verdicts handed down by Sykes since the trial commenced.
In fact, there has not been a single instance of a guilty verdict yet.
In declaring that he was at a loss in understanding some of the charges against the accused, Sykes said he could not make sense of the allegation against the four accused.
Scott is the alleged second-in-command in the gang, while Gordon is said to be the girlfriend of the accused leader Wilson.
The gang, which is said to have wreaked havoc in St Catherine, Clarendon, St Andrew, St Mary, Manchester, Trelawny, and St Ann, was busted in December 2017.
It is said that the gang gained more than $400 million from their illegal activities across the island and was fingered for 12 licensed firearms that were reported stolen during 18 robberies.
Sykes will today continue his summation of the case, which is expected to be brought to an end this week.
