Tensions rise as two killed in Spanish Town

Published:Wednesday | October 14, 2020 | 12:16 AM

A heavy security presence was being maintained in sections of Spanish Town, St Catherine, yesterday following two murders within 24 hours.

The police say they are yet to determine whether the incidents are related. However, it is believed that warring factions are behind the latest deaths.

In the first incident on Monday, 28-year-old De La Vega resident Kevon Lewis, a budding comedian who goes by the name ‘Bread’, was shot dead about midday.

The police reported that Lewis was standing along the roadway when he was approached by armed men, who shot him multiple times in his upper body.

In a second shooting yesterday, a man who remained unidentified up to press time was killed in the town centre.

The murders have heightened tension in the Old Capital.

The Gleaner was unable to reach divisional commander for the St Catherine North Police, Senior Superintendent Beau Rigabe, for comment.

Police statistics show that between January 1 and October 3, St Catherine North had recorded 90 murders, a 30 per cent increase over the corresponding period last year, when 69 people were killed.
