Juliet Holness, the member of parliament for St Andrew East Rural, is seeking to raise nearly $3 million through crowdfunding to assist with the recovery effort in the constituency, which has been recently devastated by flooding.

So far, approximately $35,000 has been contributed two days after the GoFundMe fundraiser was launched.

“Join us in raising much-needed funds to assist our recovery efforts in response to devastating flood rains in East Rural St Andrew, Jamaica,” Holness said in a Facebook post.

Holness did not specifically outline for what purpose the money would be used, although many residents have been displaced because of landslides.

In the aftermath of the heavy rains that lashed the island, Holness said: “The damage is severe and will need maximum resources to restore normality. We will continue to take a swift, but measured approach towards the rebuilding of the destruction.”
