Six persons were shot in Denham Town, Kingston, on Sunday night as men travelling on a motorcycle opened fire at patrons at a party being held in contravention of the Disaster Risk Management Act.

According to police reports, a party was in session at Race Course Lane, next to the zone of special operations (ZOSO) base in the community, when the attack took place.

The shooting sent patrons scampering for cover, some taking shelter inside the Stars R Us bar. Patrons had to lock themselves in the bathroom of the bar until the shooting subsided.

When the commotion ended, six persons were discovered shot. Two persons remain hospitalised while four were treated and released.

One of the injured patrons told The Gleaner that while dancing, he heard gunshots ring out before feeling a burning sensation.

“Me see the blood a run dung on me and me go to the soldier them … ,” he said.

The Gleaner was also told that because the patrons ran inside the bar, the shooter opened fire indiscriminately and shattered the glass door in the process.

“Ten thousand [dollars] it cost to fix back the door. A jus the frame was there because the glass shoot out and we can’t leave the business place open up,” the operator said.

Residents were thankful that no lives were lost, but said they were now in fear for their safety.

“If dem can come ya suh come shoot it up, in front or beside the ZOSO base, then what that say? We are not safe. Dem brave fi come ya suh come do that. We nah look for that right here,” one resident said.
