Ex-INDECOM official accused of killing former CRH doctor in Canada

A former medical doctor who was once employed to the Cornwall Regional Hospital (CRH) in Montego Bay is now dead, and his alleged gay lover, a former INDECOM investigator, in police custody in Toronto following a stabbing incident in the Canadian city last weekend.

The deceased doctor, a former Cornwall College and University of the West Indies graduate, is 38-year-old Rupert Brown, who worked at CRH from 2018 to 2020.

His accused killer is 28-year-old Leahain Malcolm, who was reportedly based at the Independent Commission of Investigations in Montego Bay between 2016 and 2020.

The police received a call about a disturbance at an apartment at Keele Street and Eglinton Avenue in western Toronto about 3:25 a.m. on Saturday, February 27. Brown, who was seriously injured, subsequently succumbed to his injuries.

No details on the nature of the injuries were provided.

Following preliminary investigations, Malcolm was arrested later that morning. It is unclear as to whether the men shared the apartment or had a visiting relationship.

Malcolm has appeared in court and has been remanded.

It would appear that Saturday night’s incident was not the first violent incident between the men.

According to reports, some weeks ago, the men had another violent clash. In the aftermath of that incident, Malcolm was charged with possession of a dangerous weapon. He was reportedly on bail.

Brown was a well-liked doctor during his tenure at CRH. A nurse at the facility spoke highly of him and his promise as a doctor.

“I was taken by surprise when I saw the news on his death on Facebook,” said the nurse, who asked not to be identified.

“I knew nothing about his private life, and frankly speaking, it doesn’t really matter. He decided on a career where he could help others, so it is very sad that he could not realise his full potential.”
