WESTERN BUREAU:

A male nursing assistant who was charged last week after he allegedly molested a 15-year-old girl at the Noel Holmes Hospital in Lucea, Hanover, was denied bail when he appeared in the Hanover Parish Court Thursday.

Damion Bigby, the 45-year-old accused, who is of a Hanover address, appeared before Parish Judge Winsome Henry to answer to a charge of indecent assault.

“My client was remanded to return to court on June 29 and that is all that I am prepared to say at this time,” said attorney-at-law Henry McCurdy, when The Gleaner sought a comment from him.

The presiding magistrate denied the bail application he made on behalf of Bigby.

ASSAULTED AFTER SUICIDE ATTEMPT

Reports are that the 15-year-old was admitted to the female ward at the Noel Holmes Hospital on Wednesday, May 19, after she reportedly tried to commit suicide by swallowing a large number of pills.

It is further reported that at about midnight on Friday, May 21, the teenage girl was lying in bed when Bigby entered the ward and approached her bed. He then reportedly molested her.

The child subsequently brought the matter to the attention of the female nurses on duty on the ward, and later to her mother the following morning.

The mother promptly made a report to the police, which led to Bigby being taken into custody on Monday, May 24.

Two days later, Bigby was charged following a question-and-answer session with the Lucea police.

The police have also arrested the granduncle of the teenager, who reportedly first molested her, an incident believed to have led to her attempt to commit suicide.

Allegations are that he began molesting the teenager when she was 10 years old.

The child’s mother said she only became aware of her daughter’s alleged five-year ordeal just two weeks ago when she attempted to kill herself. It was at that time that the matter was reported to the police, sparking the arrest of the granduncle.
