Suspected gunmen killed in Hanover car crash
Fleeing detection at a police checkpoint on Sunday, three alleged gunmen were killed in a motor vehicle collision along the Barbican main road in Hanover.
Four tourists and a tour bus operator were hospitalised after sustaining injuries in the crash. Those wounds are not considered life-threatening.
Police investigators reported that two guns – Browning 9mm and Beretta 9mm pistols – were taken from the gunmen, one of whom had an ID with the name Germain Scott. The others remained unidentified up to press time.
Reports by the Hanover police are that shortly after noon, the three men, who are said to be from St James, were travelling in a silver Nissan Latio motor car westerly towards Lucea.
The men allegedly got wind of a police spot check being conducted along the Mosquito Cove main road, and the driver made a U-turn and sped off towards Sandy Bay.
The driver of the Nissan reportedly lost control and collided with the tour bus, driven by Odean Gray, who was transporting four tourists from Montego Bay to Negril.
At least one of the tourists suffered a leg fracture.
Commander of the Hanover Police Division, Superintendent Sharon Beeput, commended the officers for acting swiftly and seizing the two illegal handguns.
“Their actions, along with the actions of an off-duty officer who is on vacation, resulted in the seizure,” Beeput said.
