WESTERN BUREAU:

Already equipped with public Wi-Fi access, the Westmoreland Municipal Corporation will this week commence rehabilitation work on Independence Park, the parish’s legacy project for the island’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

Bertel Moore, mayor of Savanna-la-Mar, told The Gleaner on Monday that perimeter fencing will be installed at the park, which is located in the parish capital.

“The whole thing won’t be ready for Independence Day, but work will continue throughout the rest of the year. “ ... It’s going to be done in phases.”

Moore said that a $1.45-million contract for the perimeter fencing was recently signed, but he was unable to give the estimated cost of the entire rehabilitation project.

“First, we are doing the fencing. Then, we are going to put in a jogging track, [adding] more lights, concrete tables and benches. We are also going to be upgrading the grounds,” he told The Gleaner.

The Independence Park facility, which is largely used for civic and cultural activities, has deteriorated over time, but according to Moore, when the project is complete, students and other persons will be able to use the free Wi-Fi service in comfort to do their schoolwork and other activities.

In April, the facility, the location was retrofitted with a $20-million Wi-Fi access point by the Universal Service Fund.
