Jamaica ‘doomed for failure’ on this track, says Davis
As mourners prepared to lay to rest six-year-old drowning victim Jevanie Kidd, St James South Member of Parliament Homer Davis cast the country as “doomed for failure” because of the erosion of positive family values and the coarsening of Jamaican society.
He also urged parents to be vigilant around their children, especially those who are relatively very young.
Jevanie died tragically on September 8 while crossing a ford in his community, Belfont, in Catadupa, St James.
Addressing Sunday’s funeral at the Lapland Seventh-day Adventist Church in Catadupa, Davis related that he has observed how Jevanie’s family played a vital role in his brief life on earth and questioned the lack of commitment of many Jamaican families in child-rearing.
“Is that the behaviour of all family members towards their young ones? I have seen abuse. I have seen disrespect. I have seen even recently some videos that are going around, and it puts me in a space to ask the question, are we still in Jamaica?” Davis said.
“When did we get so cross? When did we get so coarse towards our brothers and sisters? Can we continue like this? And I would say to those of us here, we cannot, because if we continue like this, we are all doomed for failure.”
The funeral was attended by hundreds of mourners. Jevanie’s body was laid to rest at the family plot in Belfont district.
