The public passenger bus driver involved in Tuesday’s eight-vehicle smash-up along Constant Spring Road in St Andrew has 120 outstanding traffic tickets and has been warned for prosecution for the latest alleged violation.

Police Commissioner Major General Antony Anderson told a press briefing on Tuesday that the driver of the bus had been derelict in settling outstanding breaches.

The bus, which plies the Constant Spring to downtown Kingston route, crashed into the back of a pickup.

There was a chain reaction resulting in damage to six other vehicles.

There were no deaths but several injuries were reported.

Anderson warned that until the law and ticketing system is strengthened, rogue drivers will continue to be reckless.

“This is a point that I have been making, that in this whole business of what happens on our roads, when the police issue these tickets, it matters, or we will continue having these kinds of people doing all kinds of things on the road,” Anderson said.

The commissioner is hoping that the new Road Traffic Act will help provide “proper consequences” for road breaches.

The accident caused a major traffic pile-up during peak hour and motorists were advised to use alternative routes.

Dashcam footage of the accident has gone viral.

The matter is under investigation by the police Public Safety and Traffic Enforcement Branch.
