Two men killed at party in Westmoreland
Dozens of residents living in George’s Plain, Westmoreland, have been left in shock after a deadly shooting at a party in their community on Thursday night, which claimed the lives of 50-year-old music producer Craig Chambers and 48-year-old promoter Owen King.
Chambers’ relatives told The Gleaner that they are struggling to come to terms with his death, adding that he was killed by a stray bullet.
“My brother is a selector. He was at the wrong place at the wrong time,” Lisa Chambers, sister of the deceased, said yesterday. “Him did a play [Thursday] night at the party and dem come and shoot up the party fi how mi get fi understand.”
Reports by the Frome police are that about 11:20 p.m., Chambers was among patrons at a party, which was promoted by King, and was being held at a shop located at a section of George’s Plain known as Jane Mark’s Road.
It is further reported that a White Toyota Axio motor car drove to the venue and two men armed with handguns alighted before opening fire at the crowd, hitting both men. The assailants escaped in the vehicle.
King and Chambers were rushed to the Savanna-la-Mar Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
Yesterday, Lisa Chambers recalled her brother as a jovial person, who was well known in the community.
“Him is a person who is a DJ, an artiste, and him is a selector, and him used to work inna the community. Him work fi Government. Him was a good person, and him nuh deserve this,” she said.
Derrick Chambers said his son was all about music and life.
“Every evening him gone out go DJ and pon him sound. Most time when you see him leave out 7:30 in the morning, you don’t see him back until late inna the night. A just music,” the elder Chambers said.
“I don’t know what happen to the young youth dem. It just rough. It just get ruff, especially in the district called George’s Plain. You affi just lock in yourself because it get violent,” he added.
Up to November 5, Westmoreland had recorded 126 murders since the start of the year, a 25 per cent increase on the 101 homicides reported for the corresponding period in 2021.
