The Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ) on Saturday night added its voice to the tributes that have been pouring in since the death of revered businessman R. Danny Williams.

Williams, a founding member of the PSOJ, philanthropist, and public servant, was hailed by the Metry Seaga-headed organisation as an exceptional Jamaican businessman, patriot, and philanthropist.

“He was a true beacon of Jamaica, remembered for his selfless service to nation-building and significant contributions to both the public and private sectors,” the PSOJ said in a statement.

Williams was the founder of Jamaica’s first domestically owned life-insurance company, Life of Jamaica, now Sagicor Life Jamaica.

In its statement, the PSOJ said he played a pivotal role in achieving numerous significant milestones and successes within Sagicor Group Jamaica.

“As director emeritus, he earned several well-deserved accolades, having dedicated over 62 years of his life to the development of the life-insurance industry and the founding of Life of Jamaica (now Sagicor Life),” the organisation added. “The PSOJ warmly acknowledges Dr Williams for his exceptional passion and dedication to advancing the life- insurance industry and contributing to the nation’s growth. The PSOJ fondly recognises Dr Williams for his remarkable ability to bring people together and navigate difficulties with grace and humility.”

Yesterday, in a tribute sent out to clients, Sagicor said Williams was “a quintessential servant leader whose actions demonstrated that we all have a responsibility to self and to the wider human race to leave the world better than we received it”.

The insurance company added that Williams “made a difference and left his indelible mark in service to the private and public sectors through his unwavering contribution to nation-building”.

‘INCREDIBLE LEGACY’

In addition to his contributions to the private sector, the PSOJ said Williams was dedicated to Jamaica’s education and youth, “leaving an indelible legacy that has touched so many lives”.

He was awarded the National Honour of Commander of the Order of Distinction (CD) and the Order of Jamaica (OJ) for voluntary service to his community. In 1997, he was inducted into the PSOJ Hall of Fame and honoured in 2013 as a founding member.

Williams’ vision and leadership have been recognised as crucial in shaping the PSOJ’s mission and goals.

Williams also served the country as a senator and state minister in the Ministry of Industry and Commerce between 1977 and 1980.

“The loss of Dr R. Danny Williams is profoundly felt by the PSOJ, and he will forever be remembered as a true Jamaican icon. His legacy will continue to guide and inspire us on our path toward a brighter and united Jamaica,” the PSOJ said.

Williams died on Saturday at age 89.
