Terece Hyatt delivered the perfect New Year’s gift to herself by giving birth to Aladane Samuels, the first baby born at the Savanna-la-Mar Public General Hospital in Westmoreland on January 1, 2024.

At 4 a.m. yesterday, hospital medical staff delivered Hyatt’s eight-pound, bouncing baby boy.

Hyatt, a 20-year-old business processing outsourcing agent, hails from Caudwell District in Hanover.

Samuels represents Hyatt’s first taste of motherhood and she told The Gleaner that giving birth to a boy was her heart’s desire.

“I am really excited that I got a baby boy, the gender I was hoping for,” the mother said with great excitement in her voice.

Hyatt’s baby was the first baby to be born in that parish. And, although she resides in Hanover, she revealed that she made the decision to journey to Westmoreland based on encouraging reports on the quality care given by persons delivering babies at the Savanna-la-Mar medical facility, along with the fact that her cervix was not opening, even after her passing her due date.

“The reason for going to Savanna-la-Mar Hospital was because my due date had passed and they were doing inducing (labour induction), and I got great recommendations about this hospital and I wanted to get induced. So I came here,” she explained.

Labour induction is when a healthcare provider gives an expectant mother medicine or uses other methods such as breaking the amniotic sac, commonly called head water, to commence labour.

While Hyatt”s only expected gift was that of her son, she was surprised and celebrated with a gift basket from the Key Club members of The Manning’s School, comprising maternal necessities.

The gift basket presentation by members of The Manning’s School’s Key Club is part of their annual New Year’s Day first-born project.

In a very appreciative manner, she thanked those responsible for the generosity of love and kindness shown to her and her baby.

“I didn’t know I was going to get any gift, but I really do appreciate it,” she said.

Danice Gray, president of the Key Club, said that other members of the club and herself were thrilled about their annual baby project.

“This year, our focus was on spreading joy to the youngest members of our community. We had the incredible opportunity to gift baby Aladane with love, warmth, and essential items, embodying the spirit of compassion that defines the Key Club’s motto,” Gray said.

She noted that her club has been doing this project for the past eight years, as part of advancing their motto - ‘caring, our way of life’.

“Witnessing our collective effort come to fruition has been truly heartening. It is a testament to the dedication and generosity that defines our club’s values,” she noted.
