Attorney-at-law Kevin Powell, president of the Jamaican Bar Association, has applauded noteworthy strides in the judicial system over the past year, but noted that there is still some way to go to make it more efficient.

He said that the continuation of the remote hearings, especially for chamber matters, is a positive move, which has helped to save travel time for lawyers and clients and is generally more convenient.

Remote hearings, which began in the throes of the COVID-19 pandemic, have now become a staple in the high and appeal courts.

Powell also noted that there have been progress in the delivery of judgments, but said there is scope for greater improvement.

As it relates to issues, he mentioned the recurring problem of the slow pace in getting back formal orders from the court as well as dates for applications and called for more to be done to have the matters expedited.

“Maybe the introduction of some technology might help to speed up that, and I know the Chief Justice is very big on digitalisation and digitisation and I know he has indicated that this year, there will be a thrust towards that so I am hoping that that will assist with the issue,” Powell said.

As it relates to trial dates, the Bar Association said there is a need for improvements in the Civil Division, where his practice is focused.
