Rookies of the Rings: Ralford Mullings
Ralford Mullings is the latest Jamaican to emerge in the men’s discus, making the event the most competitive it has been for the country.
The Oklahoma University student has had a surreal season, highlighted by a personal best throw of 69.67 metres in April. It made him Jamaica’s best thrower this year with his national teammates, Roje Stona and national champion Traves Smikle, completing the top three.
Mullings secured his place on his first Olympic team in an all-out battle for the national title in June. In his first Olympic appearance he threw 65.18m, enough to take him to his first-ever final, making history alongside Smikle and Stona. When the Olympic discus final commences tomorrow, three Jamaicans will participate for the title for the first time.
