Twenty years ago an Englishwoman who goes only by the name of ‘GG’ travelled to Jamaica for the typical tourist experience – to party and have a good time on the white sandy beaches, and soak up the sizzling sun. But she ended up falling deeply in love with the Jamaican culture and its people.

Six years ago the businesswoman, whose English accent has become entwined with Jamaican Creole, started rearing goats for a living, which grew into a lucrative business, GG Farms based in the district of Vere, Clarendon.

Two and a half years ago she landed on the idea to make and market soap made from goat milk, and decided to develop it into a value-added product.

The product, GG’s 100% Natural Goats Milk Soap, is made up of all-natural ingredients that include organic honey, raw Jamaican sugar cane, Jamaican castor oil, among other plant oils.

“It’s made exclusively from milk from our goat farms. We raise the goats, we milk the goats, we process the milk [and] then we turn it into wonderful goat milk soaps,” GG shared with The Gleaner on Independence Day during the 70th staging of the Denbigh Agricultural, Industrial and Food Show in, Clarendon.

The soap, she said, is also paired with other components like aloe vera, oats, vanilla, turmeric, activated charcoal, lavender, lilac, lemongrass, coffee grounds, and peppermint, depending on the customer’s preference. If someone is interested, they can request personalised soaps as well.

GREAT BENEFITS FOR THE SKIN

Goat milk used in skin care has several benefits, GG said, noting how nourishing it is, as well as its anti-ageing and anti-inflammatory properties.

“It’s wonderful for people with acne as it really, really clears up the face,” she said, pointing out that she is assisted in the business by two other women who are also goat farmers.

Among the other benefits goat milk soap has on the skin are hydration, reduced age spots and fine wrinkles and minimised discolouration, gently exfoliating it and leaving it looking radiant.

“It’s handmade soap, so if you leave it in water, it will get squishy,” she cautioned.

GG prides herself on meticulously perfecting her recipe.

“It’s a unique recipe. It’s got everything in it to deal with every aspect of the skin,” she stated.
