Bahia Principe Hotel brings community together for International Human Solidarity Day
Bahia Principe Hotel in Runaway Bay, St Ann last Friday celebrated the United Nation’s (UN) International Human Solidarity Day, which seeks to celebrate the world’s unity in diversity and raise awareness about the importance of solidarity.
The hotel partnered with the Social Development Commission (SDC), Discovery Bay Community Centre, and Farm Town Farmer’s Group’s monthly Economic Village to provide treats and free medical checkups for children and elderly in the community.
The community centre was retrofitted into a temporary health facility for elderly persons to receive check ups from the volunteering nurses and doctors. Thirty-two persons benefited from the health checks, which also included eye screening.
More than 70 children enjoyed the free rides and treats that were provided for them, with several of them excitedly interacting with the hotel’s entertainment team, which was on hand to provide extra entertainment.
Another of the highlights of the day was the handing out of care packages to 60 persons from Brown’s Town and Discovery Bay communities.
In a friendly football match between Bahia Principe and the Discovery Bay Young All-Stars team, the hotel won 1-0 in a penalty shootout after the game ended in a scoreless draw.
Farmers and other community members mounted stalls, exhibiting foods, plants and other items, and this was warmly received by attendees.
“We were truly grateful for the partnership and happy the event was well received,” Jevaun Johnson, the hotel’s environment and corporate social responsibility manager, said on Tuesday.
“The Christmas treat was also well received by the community.
Approximately 70 children and 80 adults were present at the venue,” he added.
According to the UN website, International Human Solidarity Day is a day to celebrate our unity in diversity; to remind governments to respect their commitments to international agreements; to raise public awareness of the importance of solidarity; to encourage debate on the ways to promote solidarity for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals including poverty eradication; and a day of action to encourage new initiatives for poverty eradication.
“Solidarity is identified in the Millennium Declaration as one of the fundamental values of international relations in the 21st Century, wherein those, who either suffer or benefit least deserve help from those who benefit most,” the UN website states.
