Oliver Nembhard a true patriot
THE EDITOR, Sir:
It is with a sense of sadness that I pen this letter to the editor in recognition of the life
and contribution to community and nation building of Oliver Nembhard, who transitioned
on May 27, 2017 after a
brief illness.
I met Oliver more than 12 years ago when I decided to enter representational politics in South West St Elizabeth. During this period, we worked closely together, first, in my successful bid to represent the constituency for the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP); and later as we worked to provide leadership to that constituency as member of parliament, and he as vice-chair of the constituency organisation.
Oliver also worked tirelessly as chairman of the National Irrigation Commission (NIC) to ensure farmers had water for agriculture. During my years working with him, I found Oliver to be a true patriot, committed to his community and country. He was always willing to serve and be available at very short notice.
An engineer by training, Oliver was very resourceful and could find a solution to any mechanical challenge. The parish of St Elizabeth, as well as Jamaica, is poorer for his passing. My deepest condolences to his family and friends.
Rest well, Oliver.
