Checklist for the new commissioner

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I wish to use this opportunity to extend my commendations to Major Anthony Anderson on being appointed as the country's next police commissioner. He will need to fearlessly, forcefully and strategically implement the full transformation of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) and as per the new Police Service Act. Among his main priorities should be the implementation of a broader strategy to arrest and eradicate the widespread levels of corruptions across all ranks of the force. The necessary resources and equipment needed to assist with the comprehensive reform and revamping of the force is critical and, certainly, additional resources are urgently needed for the force. The intelligence gathering equipment and manpower must be expanded and more usage made of those units in arresting the high profile and wealthy within the country who are deeply involved in organised crime and drug trafficking throughout the country. He will need the extensive and informed support of the prime minister and his Cabinet as well. The country's deadly crime, murder and scamming rate are at an all-time high and he needs to quickly settle into the chair of police commissioner and begin the transformation of the force and implement the germane crime reduction plans required to meticulously and methodically reduce the current high crime rate.

He has had an excellent, impressive and outstanding track record in the Jamaica Defence Force and has been working within the position of national security advisor since November 2016 appointed by PM Holness. I am certain that he will get the full support of the head of the Police's Officer Association led by Supt. Catherine Lord and Police Federation. The country needs to now give their unyielding support to Major General Anderson and assiduously work with the police to widely reduce and decrease our country's high, burdensome and devastating crime and murder rate.
