Peter Espeut should be fair

THE EDITOR, Sir:

In his commentary ‘A modern Trojan Horse’, Mr Peter Espeut has reported serious allegations about Chinese espionage at the African Union (AU) headquarters and has alluded to serious threats to Jamaica.

Before making such a serious allusion, he should at least check to find out what the African Union has to say about the matter.

The following excerpts are taken from the Guardian of January 29, 2018 (note the incident alluded to was one year ago):

“Chinese and African officials who were in Addis Ababa for the bloc’s annual summit denied Le Monde’s report.

“Paul Kagame, Rwanda’s president, who assumed the AU chairmanship this year, said he did not know anything about it. ‘But, in any case, I don’t think there is anything done here that we would not like people to know,’ he said after a meeting of African heads of state.

“I don’t think spying is the specialty of the Chinese. We have spies all over the place in this world,’ Kagame said. ‘But I will not have been worried about being spied on in this building.”

In the interest of fairness, Mr Espeut should comment on this report, and I am requesting that you publish it.
