Holness should introduce second phase of candidates

THE EDITOR, Sir:

The historic win for Ann Marie Vaz and the Jamaica Labour Party in Portland Eastern proved that putting in candidates in a seat early is a good thing. To date, the party has only introduced Robert Miller to South East St Catherine, Delroy Slowley to North East St Elizabeth, Ruel Reid to North West St Ann, Ann Marie Vaz to Portland Eastern, and Dwight Sibblies to Clarendon Northern.

Ann Marie Vaz is now in Parliament, and Ruel Reid ain’t the caretaker for North West St Ann again. I hope Prime Minister Andrew Holness starts the second phase of introductions for seats.

For Ann Marie Vaz to defeat Damion Crawford again, she will have to put a lot of runs on the board and also have assistance from St Thomas Eastern and St Mary Central with strong candidates.

The name of Michelle Charles has been floated around for St Thomas Eastern. I hope she gets introduced soon. The name of Kevin Belnavis has been floated around for Central St Mary. I hope he’s introduced soon. If the party believes they need a stronger candidate, I believe St Mary-born native ambassador Audrey Marks is right for that seat or a popular figure in the form of Empress Golding.

Tova Hamilton’s name is being called for Trelawny Northern regularly. Treasurer of the Jamaica Labour Party Phillip Henriques’ name is being called for North West Clarendon regularly.

The name of Danville Walker is being called for North West St Ann and Clarendon regularly. Dennis Meadows and Kim Brown Lawrence’s names are also being called for North West St Ann also regularly. Roy Robinson Jr’s name also is being called for Manchester Southern regularly. Don’t hear any names being called for Hanover Western yet.

All the constituencies named above could be won only if we have the candidates in from early. I believe the Jamaica Labour Party hierarchy should seriously look at putting in new caretakers for North West St Catherine and Manchester Central.
