Letter of the Day | Big plans for Lucea?

THE EDITOR, Sir:
Lucea, my home town, has been earmarked for major development, and I am more than ecstatic to hear these comments coming from Minister of Tourism Edmund Bartlett. Lucea has always been a peach of an area but has been neglected by the powers that be for decades now.
We are tired of the lip service that we have been experiencing without any action. The area has beautiful beaches which are very attractive to visitors, but they have been underutilised. From what I have gathered, Mayor Sheridan Samuels, a man from the centre of the town, is happy just like me.
The people must be very happy about the development, but I am a bit taken aback by the suggestion that the bypass will make us bigger in the tourism business. There is no logic in the suggestion by Minister Bartlett that the bypass will develop the tourism sector in the town. If visitors are allowed to pass by the town, how will that create more tourism prospects for us? It makes no sense. That is sheer garbage to me. You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to see that the minister is trying cheeky tactics to circumvent protests from the people.
In the harbour, we can have a Lucea triathlon, and revive the ‘Cross the Harbour Swim Race, which was a hit in the late ‘60s and ‘70s. The picturesque Fort Charlotte, with its three huge canon guns pointing into the Lucea Harbour, is a priceless site to see.
Visits can also be made to the Rusea’s High School’s original campus just adjacent to the fort, with its captivating beauty, founded in 1777 by Martin Rusea, a French refugee who made Lucea his home. The nearby mountain ranges are verdant and pristine, undulating straight to the sea.
